A novel model and experimental validation of dust impact on grid-connected photovoltaic system performance

A novel model and experimental validation of dust impact on grid-connected photovoltaic system performance in Northern Oman August 2020  Hussein A Kazem Sohar University Miqdam Tariq Chaichan University of Technology, Iraq Ali H Al-Waeli Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Kamaruzzaman Bin Sopian Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Abstract A grid-connected photovoltaic system was tested and investigated for the entire year under desertic weather exhibited. The system contains 1.4 kW PV and 1.7 kW inverter —the data was measured every second and used to model and evaluate the system performance. However, dust is one of the essential parameters that affect grid-connected photovoltaic performance, yield, and profitability. In this paper, a proposed model has been takes into consideration the dust impact on grid-connected photovoltaic performance in a novel way. The outcomes demonstrate that the proposed model precisely anticipated the system performance and validated through experimental results. ...

Optimization of cleaning strategies for heliostat fields in solar tower plants

Optimization of cleaning strategies for heliostat fields in solar tower plants Author GiovanniPicottiabLucaMorettibMichael E.CholetteaMarcoBinottibRiccardoSimonettibEmanueleMartellibTheodore A.SteinbergaGiampaoloManzolinib Highlights •Development of an optimized strategy for sectorial cleaning of solar fields. •Optical efficiency losses due to soiling based on a validated physical model. •The optimization of cleaning operations saves up to 20% of the related costs. •Dust concentration influences extremely the identification of the best strategy. •Mixed integer linear programming algorithm successfully applied for optimization. Abstract The reduction due to soiling of the optical efficiency of the heliostats in the solar field is a significant detrimental factor in concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. Artificial cleaning is required to maintain acceptable values of optical efficiency, especially in those areas where CSP tends to be economically viable, i.e. where the yearly available...

7 Bonus Solar + Storage Stories

7 Bonus Solar + Storage Stories  June 27th, 2020  by   Zachary Shahan   There’s only so much time in the day — a lesson I seem intent on not learning. We’ve published many  solar energy articles  in the past month and many  energy storage articles , but here are 7 more solar  plus  storage (solar+storage) articles we just couldn’t dedicate full articles to. Image courtesy  sonnen 1.  sonnen  launched the  ecoLinx 30  this month, a new intelligent energy storage system. “ecoLinx 30 features sonnen’s industry-leading warranty of 15,000 charge cycles/15 years as well as the same ability to add energy automation functionality as the existing ecoLinx product portfolio.  And with a new, shorter and wider form factor, ecoLinx 30 provides greater flexibility and versatility for placing energy storage in and around the home. “By working with new or existing solar systems, leading automation platforms, and controllable bre...

Optimising DERs: Artificial intelligence and the modern grid Published: 26 Jun 2020 By: Rahul Kar General manager and VP for New Energy The optimal integration of distributed energy resources such as solar, battery storage and smart thermostats becomes an ever-more complex and pressing question. Rahul Kar, general manager and VP for New Energy at AutoGrid Systems looks at the role artificial intelligence can play in smarter energy networks. This article first appeared in Volume 23 of Solar Media's quarterly journal, PV Tech Power, in 'Storage & Smart Power', the section of the journal contributed by Energy-Storage.news. The modern electric grid is an engineering marvel and millions depend on it for reliable and on-demand power supply. The grid is becoming greener with the growing retirement of fossil fuel generation and the penetration of renewable energy, energy storage, electric vehicles (EVs), and a variety of other networked distributed energy resources (DERs). Such...

Energy and Economic Losses due to Soiling on Utility Scale PV Systems to Guide Timing of Cost Effective Cleaning

Energy and Economic Losses due to Soiling on Utility Scale PV Systems to Guide Timing of Cost Effective Cleaning Article · June 2020 Sophia McMillin Stockburger Vicente Jesus Rios Abstract The purpose of this senior project is to develop and recommend a cleaning schedule for Goldtree Solar Farm that is both economically beneficial and an efficient use of cleaning for the client. Solar farms can have various factors that influence the cleaning schedule such as weather behavior, time of the year, soiling, and other factors. Through this senior project, the goal is to assess these factors effect on the solar farm to produce a cleaning schedule that will maximize energy production, maximize profits, and prevent insignificant cleaning This analysis is motivated by defining and promoting the benefits of regular maintenance of PV systems for the financial and power production gains. The conclusions and results of this research will be reported to and shared with REC Solar, to recommend a clea...

A novel approach to Solar PV cleaning frequency optimisation for soiling mitigation

A novel approach to Solar PV cleaning frequency optimisation for soiling mitigation June 2020  Kudzanayi Chiteka Rajesh Arora Amity University S.N. Sridhara Amity University Haryana Gurugram Christopher C Enweremadu University of South Africa Abstract Soiling is a major issue that can be a drawback to the wider deployment of solar photovoltaic systems. In this study, the influence of soiling on energy loss in Muzarabani, Zimbabwe was investigated. The daily and monthly variations in energy generated and soiling were also studied. An empirical soiling loss model was developed based on the experimental studies. It was revealed that soiling is not uniform with each passing day but rather depends on the daily differences in weather conditions. Soiling was observed to be high during the period from July to November and was less in May and June. Particle Swarm Optimisation was employed to minimise the number of days between cleaning events. Cleaning was found to be necessary every 15 days to...
